Learning to Work With Change Brings More Peace and Ease to Your Life

Working with change instead of resisting it helps restore clarity, balance, and peace in everyday life

The only thing you can truly count on is change.

Change is the most constant feature of life.
Everything that is, was, or ever will be is moving, transforming—and eventually ending.

Our wanting things to be different than they are is the problem.
It is our clinging, or our holding on to something that is already Anmoving on that is causing our suffering.

The reality: Constant change is What Is. Every moment.
Fighting against what is is a form of resistance. And resisting causes more resistance.
It is a challenge, to be sure, but it can be addressed in ways that support balance and clarity.

An ancient Tibetan saying: “As Viewed, So Appears” Expresses that how you perceive change—how you judge it—is how you will experience it.
Learning to work with change instead of resisting it is one of the keys to living with more peace and ease. And isn’t that what we all want?

Everything changes when your relationship to change changes.

It may not always be comfortable to have to shift away from what you have been used to, for instance, but change doesn’t need to be a huge problem.
If it is a case where you realize that what is passing on no longer serves you, letting it go can reveal new possibilities for your life.

Your clarity in awareness is important. It cuts through emotion and reveals the reality of a situation.

A simple practice for accommodating change:

The next time something shifts unexpectedly and you feel resistance arising—tightening in the jaw or solar plexus, for instance—pause for a moment. Acknowledge your reaction. This brings you back to being Present.

From this “home base” of presence, you are now in a position to remind yourself that a change can be a positive thing for you.
You might see various new directions in your mind’s eye and start to feel more settled.

This way, your relationship to change has changed.
You accommodate or allow it instead of fighting it, and you create a win for yourself, instead of a lose.

Learning how to respond to change instead of resisting it is one of the most supportive skills you can develop for living with greater balance and ease.
